The Little Switzerland

  Berdorf

  Echternach: Nature and Culture
This beautiful town lies on the banks of the river Sure which forms the border with Germany, at the entry to the Mullerthal and the German-Luxembourgish Nature Park. The surrounding woods are criss-crossed with numerous footpaths where complete solitude and calm can be found among rocks, waterfalls and view points.

The town of Echternach is especially well-known for the dancing procession (classified among the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage), the only one of its kind in the whole world, which takes place each year on Whit Tuesday and attracts thousands of pilgrims and interested spectators. The old patrician houses, the narrow streets and the ancient ramparts have helped Echternach to retain a remarkable medieval atmosphere. The old Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 7th century by St. Willibrord, has four wings of 75 metres, built round a large square courtyard.

The Basilica with its crypt is the most important religious building in the country. The old parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul is reputed to be the oldest Christian sanctuary in the country and stands on a slight hill in the middle of the town. The Townhall overlooking the Market Square is a remarkable historical building of the 15th century. Rococo Pavilion (15th century) in the municipal park.
